The task of learning languages is very important today. Foreign languages (and English especially) are socially demanded currently when the progress in science and technology has led to the expand of knowledge and has contributed to an overflow of information. The total knowledge of mankind is known to double every seven years. Foreign languages are needed as the main and most efficient means of information exchange of the people of our Mother Eath. Today English is the language of the world. Over 350 million people speak it as a native tongue. They live in Great Britain, the United States of America, Australia and New Zealand. English is one of the official languages in the Irish Republic, Canada, and the South African Republic. As a second language it is used in the former British and US colonies. It is the major international language for communication in such areas as science, technology, business and mass entertainment. English is one of the official languages of the United Nations Organization and other political organization. It is the language of the literature, education, modern music, international tourism.
Главная проблема на пути овладения английским языком лежит не собственно в области приобретения языковой компетенции (методики, учебники, языковая среда и языковые способности), а в области психологии.
Главная задача: Заинтересовать учащихся, увлечь их, включить в творческий поиск. Воспитать гармонично развитую личность, мыслящую готовую к открытому общению.
Это предполагает

Образовательные
формирование коммуникативной, лингвистической, лингвострановедческой, общеучебной компетенции:
  • Коммуникативная компетенция состоит в способности понимать и воспроизводить англоязычные высказывания на основе и в связи с содержанием художественного произведения, его героев в разных ситуациях общения (беседа, диалог, диспут и дискуссия, ).
  • Лингвострановедческая компетенция предполагает владение и использование соответствующими языковыми и культурно – историческими сведениями.
  • Общеучебная компетенция - навыки работы с книгой, одноклассниками, а также владение умственными операциями по анализу, синтезу и творческому переосмыслению художественной информации. Укреплять межпредметные связи с литературой, историей, географией, информатикой, МХК.
  • Филологическая компетенция подразумевает, кроме общелитературной образованности, способность учащихся посредством лингвостилистического анализа текста глубже воспринять живую функцию слова, его широкие смысловые и эстетические возможности, нашедшие отражение в особенностях языка того или иного автора.
  • Литературоведческая компетенция предполагает восприятие и осмысление стилистических особенностей английских и американских писателей на языке оригинала.
Воспитательные:
  • прививать любовь к книге, поэзии и потребность в чтении;
  • воспитывать чувство прекрасного;
  • воспитывать уважительное отношение к другим народам и культуре;
  • воспитывать уважительное отношение к окружающим нас людям, культуру поведения и взаимоотношений среди окружающих людей.
  • укреплять любовь к предмету, интерес к английскому языку.
Развивающие:
Развивать навыки чтения оригинальной неадаптированной литературы, восприятия речи на слух, монологической и диалогической речи, расширять мировоззрение, внимание, логическое мышление, тренировать объем и увеличивать качество памяти.

III. Вступительная речь учителя. Объявление темы и цели урока.
I invite you to join the tour around Britain. British literature is rich. You can always find a town, a city connected with a famous writer. For example, In South West Scotland you can follow the story of Robert Burns, the great Scottish poet. We can learn a lot about different characters from books and films.
Today we’ll speak about original English literature, its famous writers and poets, repeat the Grammar – Gerund.
IV. Listen to me. Agree or disagree. Give your reasons.
I think that reading and books are very important in our life. A well – written and beautifully illustrated book always attracts our attention.
Books give us nessesery information and a clever book is a good friend with whom you can discuss a lot. Books include interesting photos, biographical details and statistics, a lot of unknown facts. Books help us to solve our problems, to discover new things and to escape from routine every day life. A good humourous book is an entertaining reading.
V. Listen to some poems and try to guess?
Who is the author of the poem? What do you know about him?
What is the title of it?

Pupil2 I think that the poem was written by an outstanding English poet William Shakespeare. (1564 – 1616.) He was born in a beautiful City Stratford – upon – Avon. Roayl
Shakespeare Company and Roayal Shakespeare Theatre were opened there. I know it`s a sonet, but I don`t know what is it`s number.

A GALLOWAY LEGEND
From the bonny bells of heather
They brewed a drink long-syne,
Was sweeter far than honey,
Was stronger far than wine.
They brewed it and they drank it,
And lay in a blessed swound
For days and days together
In their dwellings underground.
There rose a king in Scotland,
A fell man to his foes,
He smote the Picts in battle,
He hunted them like roes.
Over miles of the red mountain
He hunted as they fled,
And strewed the dwarfish bodies
Of the dying and the dead.
Summer came in the country,
Red was the heather bell;
But the manner of the brewing
Was none alive to tell.
In graves that were like children`s
On many a mountain head,
The Brewsters of the Heather
Lay numbered with the dead.
The king in the red moorland
Rode on a summer`s day;
And the bees hummed, and the curlews
Cried beside the way.
The king rode, and was angry,
Black was his brow and pale,
To rule in a land of heather
And lack the Heather Ale.
It fortuned that his vassals,
Riding free on the heath,
Came on a stone that was fallen
And vermin hid beneath.

VIII. Make a list of five positive traits of character which you think are the most important in a man (Range them from the most important to the least important.) Discuss in pairs. Now in groups of four.

IX. Look at the covers of the books. What do you think of the characters in the book. What feelings do the books raise in you? What do you think are the books about?
What do you know about the authors of the books? Have you read any of this books or other books by these writers or watched films?

X. Read the extracts below (1 – 8) and say what kind of book is it?
1. Far out in the uncharted backwaters of the unfashionable end of the western spiral arm of the Galaxy lies a small unregarded yellow sun.
Orbiting this at a distance of roughly ninety – two million miles is an utterly insignificant little blue green planet whose ape – descended life forms are so amazingly primitive that they still think digital watches are a pretty neat idea.
This planet has – or rather had–a problem, which was this: most of the people on it were unhappy for pretty much of the time. Many solutions were suggested for this problem, but most of these were largely concerned with the movements of small green pieces of paper, which is odd because on the whole it wasn’t the small green pieces of paper that were unhappy.
And so the problem remained; lots of the people were mean, and most of them were miserable, even the ones with digital watches.
2. They moved swiftly, silently, with purpose, under a crystalline, star-filled night in western Siberia. They were Muslims, though one could scarcely have known it from their speech, which was Russian, though inflected with the singsong Azerbaijani accent that wrongly struck the senior members of the engineering staff as entertaining. The three of them had just completed a complex task in the truck and train yards, the opening of hundreds of loading valves. Ibrahim Tolkaze was their leader, though he was not in front. Rasul was in front, the massive former sergeant in the MVD who had already killed six men this cold night-three with a pistol hidden under his coat and three with his hands alone. No one had heard them. An oil refinery is a noisy place. The bodies were left in shadows, and the three men entered Tolkaze`s car for the next part of their task.
3. Out of this complex microscopic cellular activity emerged one of the mysteries of the universe: consciousness! Mind had once more been born of matter.
Consciousness was the faculty that provided foundation for memory and meaning; and also terror and dread. With consciousness came the burden of knowledge of eventual death. But at that moment, the consciousness created was consciousness without awareness. Awareness was next and soon to come.
4. He was a man to whom everybody came for help, and never were they disappointed. He made no empty promises, nor the craven excuse that his hands were tied by more powerful forces in the world than himself. It was not necessary that he be your friend, it was not even important that you had no means with which to repay him. Only one thing was required. That you, you yourself, proclaim your friendship. And then, no matter how poor or powerless the supplicant, He would take that man’s troubles to his heart. And he would let nothing stand in the way to a solution of that man’s woe. His reward? Friendship, the respectful title of “Don,” and sometimes the more affectionate salutation ... And perhaps, to show respect only, never for profit, some humble gift– a gallon of homemade wine or a basket of peppered taralles– specially baked to grace his Christmas table. It was understood, it was mere good manners, to proclaim that you were in his debt and that he had the right to call upon you at any time to redeem your debt by some small service.
5. People believe, thought Shadow. It’s what people do. They believe. And then they will not take responsibility for their beliefs; they conjure things, and do not trust the conjurations. People populate the darkness; with ghosts, with gods, with electrons, with tales. People imagine, and people believe: and it is that belief, that rock-solid belief, that makes things happen.
The mountaintop was an arena; he saw that immediately. And on each side of the arena he could see them arrayed.
They were too big. Everything was too big in that place.
There were old gods in that place: gods with skins the brown of old mushrooms, the pink of chicken flesh, the yellow of autumn leaves. Some were crazy and some were sane. Shadow recognized the old gods. He’d met them already, or he’d met others like them. ...
